She paced the room in her undies, her pants barely succeeding staying intact as her hips swayed. Finally, she sat opposite me, I could see the tears fighting at the corners of her eyes and when she spoke the crack in her voice drove knifes through my heart.
Why do you think he did it? She asked. It was the same line as the last couple of times, this time “he” was Henry, she had met him on a bus two weeks back. She had a knack for falling in love on short notice. Henry had turned out to be engaged, probably looking for one last hurrah before he settled down. I couldn’t blame him completely, Sara was hard to resist, she was the type of girl you couldn’t help but look at when she passed.
Her hips were shaped like the peach emoji, they served to accentuate her butt which are soft, so they bounced no matter what she wore. Coupled with the fact that she wasn’t hard to look at with cat eyes set in a heart shaped face, full lips that always looked like she’d been kissing. Her skin was dark chocolate which the sun was in love with. She was, in a word, glowing.
Not right now, right now she was staring at me with those eyes, waiting for comfort. So I told her how silly Henry was, how he’ll never find anyone like her and he’ll be miserable. It was the wrong thing to say, Sara had a soft fickle heart, it fluctuates between love and hate with the ease one would use to change channels. She frowned, I don’t want him to be miserable, I want him to be happy and content with his wife.
I couldn’t help it, I rolled my eyes then smiled at the hopelessness of my situation. Come here I said, gesturing to my laps. She made her usual baby face, broke into a smile and crawled into my arms.
I kissed her forehead, one day, I said, you’ll find someone who’ll love you beyond what you can imagine. She laughed, that’ll be the day. Five minutes later I had to make an excuse to get her to stand. My body was on the verge of betraying me and I’ll be damned if I was the rebound.
She stood, then squinted at me, like she was trying to see through me. What, I said keeping my voice steady. She couldn’t have noticed, could she? She smiled, nothing, I should really get going she said, I can’t stay here and mope forever. And just like that Henry’s case was over, all he got was one weekend of grief. As we walked to my junction, I told her about Chioma, my most recent girlfriend, I hated telling her about my girls, but she relished the stories and I relished her relish.
Chioma was acting up, demanding more. She wanted me to be more committed. Sara just listened, I wondered what she did with the stories anyway.
At the junction, I stopped a keke for her, she hugged me and whispered into my ears “you need to grow some balls”. As the keke pulled away, she looked out and smirked right at me. I got the sinking feeling she wasn’t talking about my girls.
